I really enjoy stretching the palette of what might be the trombones likely setting, and hope to find some new combination that I’ve never heard before. It really opens up the door to creative possibility.

Over the years I’ve been playing, I’ve had a wide range of music performance opportunities. Symphony, Opera, Ballet, Dixieland, Big Band, small combo jazz, pop music, Salsa, movies, Broadway shows, marching band, brass quintet, solos, duets, trios, quartets, trombone choir. Did I forget something? Probably! And my recordings have included Vibes, marimba, woodwind quintet, string quartet, and the usual suspect, piano.

On this project, I even went so far as to include a couple things without the trombone! What? Are you crazy? What kind of trombone album is this anyway?

So I hope you enjoy hearing these pieces. They come from different times, different groups, different instruments, and all express something that speaks to me and I hope it speaks something to you!

The album “Sónando en Color” is a bold and imaginative project by Gerry Pagano, one of today’s most versatile bass trombonists. This album defies traditional expectations of a trombone recording and has an eclectic mix of original compositions, innovative arrangements, and diverse instrumentation. While the trombone remains central, Pagano’s foray into including other instruments provides a rich, multifaceted listening experience.

The album opens with Carl Lundgren’s “I-35,” featuring Pagano’s technical precision and lyrical phrasing, supported by his tight interplay with his drummer, Kevin Giannino. The tango selections—Adrienne Albert’s “Tango,” Stravinsky’s “Tango,” and Pagano’s own “Horcha Tango”—showcase his ability to blend rhythmic intensity with a sultry, expressive tone.

Pagano’s compositional voice stands out in “Isotopes Waltz” and “Kiva,” where he balances technical complexity with emotional depth. “Zozobra,” a darker, brooding piece, contrasts the soulful, chant-like “Kachina.” The variety of timbres, from the ethereal sounds of “Spiegel im Spiegel” to the cinematic grandeur of Hans Zimmer’s “Time,” adds a dynamic layer to the album.

Throughout Sónando en Color, Pagano’s artistry is evident in his playing and ability to curate a cohesive, yet diverse program. Including the oboe, mandolin, and lap guitar further enriches the sonic landscape. The impressive roster of musicians delivers each piece with clarity and finesse, allowing the intricate interplay among instruments to come alive.

With its unique blend of styles and inventive instrumentation, Sónando en Color offers something for everyone. Whether you are a trombone enthusiast or someone who appreciates finely crafted music, this album is a must-listen. Pagano’s work serves as a reminder that music, at its best, transcends boundaries and connects deeply with its audience.
